Last summer in Italy I had the most amazing bread sticks! I tried to recreate them so I can enjoy them at home too. They are super easy to make and taste a little like Italian pizza.
What you will need for 6 sticks:
- 250 grams of breadmix for white bread
- about 5 teaspoons of Italian herbs
- red pesto
- grated cheese
- 150 ml water
How to do it:
Preheat the oven to 200 degrees celsius. Mix the breadmix with the water in a large bowl (unless the directions on the packaging tell you otherwise, then follow those directions) and about 3 teaspoons of herbs until you have a firm dough. Cover the bowl with clingfilm and let the dough rest for about 10 minutes. Divide the dough into 6 even pieces and roll them into the shape of sticks. Use your hands to press them more flat. Spread the pesto on top of them and ‘sprinkle’ the rest of the herbs and cheese (to taste) on top. Twist the dough once or twice, depending on how long the sticks are. Bake them in the oven for 15 minutes. Then turn off the oven and put a wooden spoon (or something else) between the oven door so it will be left open for just a bit and leave the bread sticks in the oven for another 5 minutes.
